Splitter Crack country

Enjoy panoramic views atop two of the most iconic sandstone towers in the US: Castleton and Fisher Towers.  I have been leading full-day adventures up these two incredible formations for the past few seasons and I must say they are some of the most scenic, accessible, exposed, and memorable trips of all that I have the pleasure of guiding.

Stolen Chimney on the Fisher Towers boasts four pitches of intermediate climbing and concludes by crossing a narrow rock-bridge and ascending the breath taking 30-foot corkscrew feature with over 500 feet of exposure to the narrow summit barely big enough to stand on. Will you be brave enough to stand on top?

The North Chimney on Castleton Tower is another four-pitch intermediate route that takes you seemingly to the top of the world where you will enjoy 360 degree views of the La Sal Mountain Range and the expansive, burnt orange desert landscape of Castle Valley. My preferred route is the North Chimney but the Kor-Ingalls is extremely popular as it holds the coveted Steck and Roper “50 classic” climb status.

It is worth mentioning that these are just the most popular choices and there are dozens of towers to choose from. There is also amazing single pitch climbing and some spectacular faces that are prime territory for practicing Big Wall techniques before testing your skills on the big stone of Yosemite or Zion.

What drew me to Moab in the first place is the splitter cracks. A splitter crack is a perfectly parallel continuous crack that tends to stay the same size for almost the entirety of the climb, sometimes up to two or three hundred feet of the same size! If you have been wanting to improve your crack technique, there is no better place in the world than in Moab and the infamous Indian Creek. I offer splitter crack camps where we will spend two days honing in our crack technique and on the third day we will tackle a desert tower; ascending splitter cracks to the summit. Check out the splitter crack camp page here.

The best time of the year to climb in Moab is Spring and Fall.
